Diabetic Retinopathy
Hypertensive Retinopathy
This is a collection of alterations occurring within the retina that is brought about by high blood pressure.
When the patient has high blood pressure, there are certain symptoms that are detectable by the ophthalmologist. These symptoms appear as lesions on the retina and although they are typically a consequence of high blood pressure, they can be related to other factors. Arterial sclerosis and age are also influences in its development.
It is important for the physician to examine the rear of the eye in hypertensive patients since there is a strong association in the changes in the retina and the evolution of hypertension. These exams can allow the doctor to grade the extensiveness of the illness. It also gives the doctor an idea if any other organs are being affected by the hypertension.
