Bullous Keratopathy

This refers to the swelling of the cornea that occurs frequently in older people. The swelling produces ampoules of liquid in the outer part of the cornea that can be ruptured causing pain and diminishing vision. It can be treated by reducing the amount of liquid in the cornea by using saline solution or soft contact lenses. In rare occasions it is necessary to have corneal transplants.  Nowadays there are certain cases that can be solved by transplanting the corneal endothelium rather than the entire cornea.
