The Macula
For the diagnosis of any macular illness, the doctor will conduct an exam of the inner eye. Through dilation of the pupil the doctor will examine the changes in the retina.
Treatment: The patient must be in good health especially with good cholesterol levels, low alcohol consumption, a lack of smoking, and a diet consisting of fruits and vegetables. It is also important to protect the eye from ultraviolet rays.
For the dry form of this disease, the patient will only require certain, specialized food supplements. For the “humid” form, lasers or photodynamic therapy can be useful to make improvements or stabilize the disease.
One of the newer treatments is the application of intraocular avastin that inhibits the growth of abnormal retinal blood vessels. |
